| Anyone can suffer but
hypothyroidism most commonly affects females. Age is also an influential
factor. The elderly are more susceptible. Unfortunately
hypothyroidism is often left undiagnosed in the aging
population, as the symptoms are often mistaken for those of
aging; such as memory less, fatigue, and dry skin. Meanwhile
the symptoms are left untreated in young females as they are
often ignored and considered to be the result of regular
hormone fluctuations.
Genetics plays a huge
influential role. If relatives have an autoimmune disease this
significantly increases the odds of a person developing
hypothyroidism.
Those who are suffering from
anorexia or bulimia are at special risk, as the reduced
thyroid function is an adaptation to malnutrition. If this is
the case than the eating disorder needs to be treated.
